NEW YORK. Shares of $100. orange, black. No 16981. Small format. Always popular for its place in history. The line ran (and still does run) for 47 miles from Aspinwall, on the Atlantic, to Panama city, on the Pacific. The line was chartered by the State of New York in 1849. Theline was opened in 1855, its immediate purpose being to provide a route to California. By the early 1880s it had become a great commercial highway between the nations of western Europe and those of east Asia, as well as between San Francisco and New York. The de Lesseps Canal Co. acquired a controlling interest in this railroad company. Once the Panama Canal was completed, in 1915, the railway lost much of its importance.
