Lotnummer: 541
NEW YORK. Bond for 1000 Pesos. green. No 138. Vignette of 'Liberty' with the flag of Cuba. An interesting piece, because there was no Republic of Cuba at this time. Cuba was still a Spanish colony. The text states that the bond was issued by the 'President of the Junta Central Republicana de Cuba y Puerto Rico'. After the conclusion of a peace treaty between Spain and the Republic of Cuba, the departure of the Spanish government from the whole of Cuba, and the recognition by the United States of America of the political independence of the Republic of Cuba, interest (and, later' the principal) of this loan would be paid. Unfortunately for the investors, it was not until 1900, after the Spanish-American War, that these events came to pass, and we believe that these bonds were never honoured. Somewhat tired condition: folds with a few tiny holes and also some discolouration. Extremely rare.
