Plans to build a railway between London and York were first proposed as early as 1827, but the line was not authorised until 1846 (when the company was formed and this share issued). Various lines were opened in the late 1840s/early 1850s, with the London terminal, at Kings Cross, opening 1852. In 1857 the company started express services from London to Sheffield and Manchester. By 1860 all main towns in West Yorkshire were served, and coal from this area became valuable business for the company.By the early 1870s the Great Northern was running more express trains than any other company in the country.
