OOST-VLAANDEREN. Obligatie van 1000 Gulden. handwritten, black seal. 8-page document (4 of which written, in Flemish), with some discolouration and (water) staining, but overall in very fine condition. The big black wax seal is most impressive and unusual for us to see on an 18th century financial document. It shows a medieval harnassed knight. Issued by the two mayers of the cities (Aalst and Geraardsbergen) and the bailiff of the five baronies (Boelare, Gavere, Rode, Schorisse, Zottegem) of the "Landen van Aelst". The region used to be a separate earldom from 1046 to 1164 after which it became ruled by the Count of Flanders. Yet, it held its own administration led by a High Bailiff until 1759. Since first discovered in 2014, this has remained a unique bond. Extremely early date.
