5% Prior Mortgage Debenture £100. Serie 2. green, buff. #2000. No 4694. Fold. In 1871, a contract was given for construction of a railroad from Alajuela to Puerto Limon on the Caribbean coast passing through San José. The construction from Alajuela to San José was finished in the beginning of 1873 and later continued to Cartago. Necessary materials and equipment were brought in from Puntarenas to Alajuela by oxen pulled carts. Due to shortage of finance and natural difficulties, the completion of the following sections was delayed. In 1886 the wellknown American railway entrepreneur Minor C. Keith formed the Costa Rica Railway Co. Ltd, which took charge of completing the railway, and administration of its operations. The Government retained 1/3 of the shares, but in 1889, when the government was unable to repay an English loan, it transferred the shares to Keith, against his personal repayment of the loan. The whole line to Limon started operations in 1890. A Pacific Railroad was officially inaugurated in 1910, from Puntarenas to San José with passengers and freight. The railways were owned partly by the state, partly by the Costa Rica railway company, which, in 1904, arranged to build several branch lines through the banana districts of the Atlantic littoral. Further lines were built by theUnited Fruit Co. in the banana growing area at the Atlantic, to transport the fruit. Later followed the Northern Railway of Costa Rica which took over the lines of the Costa Rica Railway. Printed by Waterlow.
