ROTTERDAM. Transfer of a Bond of 1000 guilders. black. #40. Folds and some edge-damage. Extremely early Dutch government bond transfer, handwritten (very readable), fiscal stamp seal of 24 stuvers, signed by Cornelis Keleman. Keleman was the authorized agent of Gualterus Hennequin, the buyer of the bond. Hennequin (1653-1738) was burgomaster of Rotterdam (at that time a city of roughly 50,000 citizens) and an important diplomat involved in several international peace negotiations in the early 18th century. The bond was repayable at the office of Corlenis de Jonge, the Collector-General of the Dutch Republic. Only 40 bonds were issued. Hence certainly a great rarity, and only piece known to us. Must be one of the earliest Dutch government papers ever seen. It is certainly the oldest we have ever offered.
