PARIS. Share subscription. black on green paper. No 522. Central fold and some faint staining. Founded 1875, Lyon as a catholic bank by monarchists. The purpose was to compete with the major protestant and Jewish banks of those days (e.g. Rothschild, Neuflize and Hottinguer). In 1878, Paul Eugène Bontoux takes control of the bank and - with support of the clergery - increases the capital of the bank from 25 to 200 million francs (1881). The money is largely invested in the French, but also foreign, industry (mining, railroads, insurance companies, etc.). Branches were opened in Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Saint-Etienne and Rome. In early 1882, the bank collapses during a speculative bubble. Its crash made headlines around the world. The certificate we offer is a subscription certificate for 100 shares in the bank, for an amount of 25.000 fr. First time seen by us.
