THIRD SHOOTING FESTIVAL IN NEW YORK

Losnummer: 632
1 Share of $10. green, black. No 1192. This piece was issued to Theodore Steinway (1825-89), piano manufacturer and eldest son of the founder, Henry Steinway. Steinway moved the family business from Manhattan to Queens, and built housing, shops, churches and schools for its workers. He was very active in civic affairs, and developed street-railways and real estate. The festival of the 'American Sharp Shooters Society' follows a German tradition of such festivals. These shares were issued to pay the preliminary expenses of the festival, and were to be redeemed from the proceeds. Underprint of a building in a park, doubtless the centre of the Festival. Also 'Liberty' with the flag.
