ILLINOIS. 5% Second Mortgage Gold Terminal Bond $1000, specimen. brown, black. Specimen. Folds with splits. Founded 1885 as a regional line between St.Paul and the Iowa state line, and called the Minnesota and Northwestern RR. Through mergers and new construction, the railroad, named Chicago Great Western, quickly became a multi-state carrier, linking Chicago. Minneapolis, Omaha and Kansas City. The Great Western also expanded its assortment of feeder branch lines in Iowa, Minnesota and Illinois, but plans to continue expanding the railroad north to Duluth, Minnesota, west to Sioux City, Iowa or Denver, Colorado, or south into Mexico, never came to fruition. At its peak, it operated over 2.000 miles of track. It operated several named trains, mostly between Chicago and the Twin Cities, but was primarily a freight carrier. In 1968 it merged with the Chicago and North Western Railway, which abandoned most of the CGW's trackage, but some still survives, worked by Union Pacific.
