Founded by Sir Charles Tilston Bright, a famous British electrical engineer who oversaw the laying of the first transatlantic cable in 1858, for which work he was knighted. Originally founded in 1869 and laying commenced in 1870. Three years later the following network was working: Santiago de Cuba - Kingston, Jamaica - Colon, Panama ; Kingston - San Juan, Puerto Rico - St. Thomas - St. Kitts - Antigua ; Guadeloupe - Dominica - Martinique -St. Lucia - St. Vincent Barbados : St. Vincent - Grenada - Trinidad - British Guiana. In 1877 the company went into liquidation but a new company with the same name was set up in the same year. More cables were laid in future year, amongst ohters: Jamaica - Ponce, Puerto Rico, Ponce - St. Croix, St. Croix - St. Thomas, Santiago de Cuba - Jamaica.In 1938, the company was renamed into the Cable and Wireless (West Indies) Ltd. Cable & Wireless is today of course a huge name in telecommunications.
