CANTERBURY NAVIGATION & SANDWICH HARBOUR

Losnummer: 796
CANTERBURY. 1 Share of £25. black. No 1222. One of the best of the many fine early English shipping/canal shares. Vignette of high artistic quality, of Canterbury Cathedral and the harbour at Sandwich, with the arms of Kent and the two towns, engraved by Fenner. The object was to link the city ofCanterbury to the sea, without using the river Stour, which was narrow, shallow, and difficult for navigation. The building of the canal was delayed, and only partly built when the railway reached Canterbury, thus giving access to the sea. The canal wasnever completed, and the company was soon liquidated. Some of the works are still to be seen.
