The company was formed in 1871 by Gilpin, Governor of Colorado Territory, and his colleagues, as a way of persuading original settlers to leave their land in the Sangre de Cristo mountains.The company prepared documents for the settlers to sign away their common land use privileges, by using an impostor disguised as a homesteader. The company could then take rights to the vacant land, and sell it on to ranch owners.
