ALEXANDRIE. 1 Part Nom. de £st.5. green, black. #720. No 328. Staining around the edges. Heavy central fold with tiny holes. The vignettes show the club, and a statue of Mohamed Ali, also sphinx and pyramids. Mohamed Ali, an Albanian, was appointed in 1809 by the Ottoman emperor as Pasha (governor) of Egypt. However, he made Egypt stronger than the Ottomans and became virtually independent. He conquered Syria and Crete, but was forced by European pressure to give them up. He was a good soldier, and wanted to modernise the country, but had little idea of how to develop Egypt's economy. The famous mosque in the Cairo citadel, well-known to tourists, was built by him. Rare and early Egyptian share.
