A letter of marque (=a government license authorizing a private person, known as a privateer or corsair, to capture vessels) by which, in the name of King George III, permission was given 'for the attacking, surprising, seizing, and taking" ... "ships and vessels, goods and merchandises belonging to the inhabitants of the American colonies now in rebellion". The ship in question was the whale boat 'the surprise' with Donald Ferguson as captain and a crew of 10 men. Their home port was Charlestow and they were set to depart for a 2 month campaign. Issued during the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783).
