LONDON. Cert. for 1 Unit. green, black. No 106148. A large number of small cancellation holes, otherwise in extremely fine condition. Issued London for 1/5000 of a Kux in the Witkowitz mining, armaments and industrial complex in Ostrava, Czechoslovakia. This was in Rothschild family control for a hundred years. In 1937 it employed more than 10.000 workers and was controlled by Baron Louis Rothschild of Vienna. When the Nazis attempted to confiscate the business, they found the Baron had transferred the Kuxe in trust to the Alliance Assurance Co in London (founded in 1824 by Nathan Mayer Rothschild - see lot 402). The Germans then agreed a price of £2.9 million for Witkowitz, but failed to pay. After the war, the communist government of Czechoslovakia took over Witkowitz and paid £1 million to the Rothschilds. This certificate (printed by Bradbury Wilkinson) shows that in 1937 Alliance Assurance planned to market subdivisions of the Kuxe. Very rare.
