Nathan Mayer (1777-1836) was one of the five sons of the second-generation of the Rothschild banking dynasty. In 1798, he went to England and soon made fortune in trading bills of exchange. In 1809, he began to deal in gold bullion which became a cornerstone of his business. He undertook to transfer money topay Wellington's troops on campaign against Napoleon. Government financing became dominant in the late 1910s and by 1825, he was able to supply enough coin to the Bank of England to enable it to avert a liquidity crisis. In 1824 he founded the AllianceAssurance CO. (later Royal &SunAlliance) with Moses Montefiore. He will also remain known for his role in the abolition of the slave trade through his help in the British Government buyout of the plantation industry's slaves. A most interesting historic document, and extremely rare.
