PRETORIA. black. Grant of a piece of land in the town of Utrecht (South-Africa). Signed as State President by Paul Kruger. Kruger (1825-1904) fought in the Boer army against the Bantu, and by 1863 was its commander. He was a founder of the Reformed Church of South Africa in 1859 and played a leading part in the first Boer War, started in 1880, and then in 1883 was elected President of the Transvaal. He was reelected in 1888, 1893 and 1898. During the main Boer War (1899-1902) he went to Europe to seek help against Britain, but was unsuccessful. He died in Switzerland two years after his country lost the War. The signature is uncancelled, and very clear.
