Beit, a Jew from Hamburg, born in the same year as Cecil Rhodes, came to South Africa in 1875. He worked closely with Rhodes, and helped to form his diamond empire, using his connections with important German and French financiers. The main road bridge from South Africa across the Limpopo river to Zimbabwe is called Beit Bridge.
