CAPE OF GOOD HOPE. CAPE TOWN. Cert. of Nom. Share £12. black on blue paper. No 1891. Somewhat damaged left border, outside the printed part of the share. The bank was formed in Cape Town in 1855. At first its activities were in the Cape area, with branches opened in various towns such as Stellenbosh. In 1875, after discovery of gold atPilgrim's Rest, in the boer South African Republic (ZAR) (later the Transvaal), it opened branches in Pretoria, Potchefstroom, Pilgrim's Rest and elsewhere. In 1873 President Burgers of the ZAR had raised a loan from the Bank to the new republic, repayable at £3000 a year, but it was repaid in 1875, thanks to the discovery of gold in the Witwatersrand and diamonds in the Kimberley area. The ZAR later raised a further loan from the Bank, for £48.000, and was heavily dependent on its relations with the bank for the Republic's survival. However, the CCB failed in 1883. Oldest South African bank share we have seen.
