Founded 1908 jointly by the government of the Korean Empire and private capital from Japan and Korea. Its head office was originally in Hanseong (Seoul today) but moved to Tokyo in 1917. It originally owned 5,700 hectares of land in Korea and engaged in immigration and development by the Japanese. Over the years, and despite resentment among Korean farmers, the land owned by the company rose to 78,000 hectares (1919), which was almost 2% of the total acreage under cultivation in Korea. It became the largest landowner in Korea under Japanese rule and 78,667 people farmed the land as tenants in 1937. It became de facto the center of Japenese colonial administration in Korea.
