black. Bonds issued by the Confederate States during the American Civil War are among the most popular collecting themes in scripophily. They are not only historically very interesting, but also visually appealing (with different kind of vignettes, portraits of key people during the war). Moreover, there history and the different types and subtypes issued are since several decades well researched and published in several reference catalogues. The best-known catalogue is probably the one written by Grover C. Criswell (1st edition in 1961, 2nd edition in 1979). However, in 1998, Douglas B. Ball published a much more detailed work, entitled 'Comprehensive Catalog and History of Confederate Bonds'. The collection we offer here (and in detail described in the following lots: 1212 to 1345) is ordered in accordance with his publication. Anyone interested in this book, can order it by us directly ( On the collection we offer here as one lot, and bond by bond in the next lots in case nobody would be interested in the entire collection : it is essentially by far the largest collection of Confederate bonds we have ever had in our hands since we started with our auctions in 1984. So yes, the buyer of this collection would immediately possess a very advanced collection including several great rarities. Yet, the number of varieties identified (e.g. by Douglas Ball) makes a further completion of this collection a challenging though not impossible task.
