TEXAS. NEW YORK. 7% 1ø Mortgage Land Grant Gold Bond of $1000. black, red. No 933. Folds and some remaining glue signs at the bottom. Issued by the Waco & North Western Division. The Houston and Central Texas Railway was chartered in 1848. By the beginning of the Civil War in 1861, it had laid only 81 miles of track. One of the first to restart construction again after the war, the H&TC reached Corsicana in 1871, Dallas in 1872, and Red River City in 1873 to connect with the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railroad. Texas was then connected by rail to St. Louis, Chicago, and the East Coast. The H&TC, offering both freight and passenger service, grew through construction and mergers with other lines to serve Austin, Waco, Fort Worth, and South Texas. It was sold to Southern Pacific in 1883. Vignettes of two trains, Indians and a lady farmer. Uncancelled. Signed by William E. Dodge (1805-1883), one of the "Merchant Princes" of Wall Street before the Civil War, a noted abolitionist and Native American rights activist. Founder of Phelps, Dodge and Co, one of Americas largest mining firms.
