NEW JERSEY. ELIZABETH. Shares of $100. black. No 359. Issued to and signed by James D. Fisk, however we could not find any confirmation that this is the famous financier James Fisk Jr. (1835-1872) or establish any relationship between the two. However, this stock is a great rarity in itself. Only 2 pieces have ever been reported and neither has been on the market for over 20 years. Founded 1854 to construct a railroad from the Raritan Bay to Cape Island (Cape May), near the outlet of Delaware Bay as part of a rail and water route from New York to Norfolk, Virginia. The first section opened in 1860. The company was for many years in strong competition with the Camden and Amboy RR and went in bankruptcy in 1869. Reorganized as the New Jersey Southern RR by Jay Gould. Large allegorical vignette atthe center and smaller vignette of a steamboat at the bottom.
