ILLINOIS. CHICAGO. Shares of $10. green, black. No 8312. Folds. The World's Columbian Exposition (also known as The Chicago World's Fair) was held in Chicago in 1893 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Columbus's arrival in the New World in 1492. The iconic centerpiece of the Fair, the large water pool, represented the long voyage Columbus took to the New World. Chicago bested New York City; Washington, D.C.; and St. Louis for the honor of hosting the fair. The Exposition was an influential social and cultural event and had a profound effect on architecture, sanitation, the arts, Chicago's self-image, and American industrial optimism. The exposition covered more than 600 acres (2.4 km), featuring nearly 200 new (but purposely temporary) buildings of predominantly neoclassical architecture, canals and lagoons, and people and cultures from 46 countries. The fair also served to show the world that Chicago had risen from the ashes of the Great Chicago Fire, which had destroyed much of the city in 1871. Shows an allegorical woman with a U.S. eagle, also an underprint of the expo site
