MICHIGAN. PARIS. Share of £20=F500. Serie 2. blue, black. #20000. No 11545. Fold. Text in English and French. Company originally founded in France in or just before 1849 as the Soc. Maurice &Cie to mine for copper near Lake Superior. Good dividends were paid between 1849-1853. The company owned 2400 hectares at the shores of Lake Superior, northern Michigan. Turned into a limited company in 1855 when this share was issued. Amassed serious losses 1855-1857 due to mismanagement (perhaps a fraud?) and soon went into liquidation. Yet, Michigan Copper Country remained the nation's leading producer of copper for many more decades. Only once before seen by us.
