CONNECTICUT. An impressive collection of 35 different promissory notes / fiscal paper / debt certificates issued by the State of Connecticut during the revolutionary years. 25 pieces are printed while 10 (mostly from 1778) are entirely handwritten. Issues about thepublic debt caused a lot of discussions and controversy in those days and played an important role in the road to American independence. As such, these certificates illustrate a key moment in American history. They are worthy of a detailed study. The book written by scholar William G. Anderson, "The Price of Liberty - the public debt of the American Revolution" can be of great help. It lists, among other interesting texts, the different types of revolutionary debt certificates state by state. Connecticut, an already rather prosperous and strongly developed state in the late 18th century, apparently issued more of these certificates than any other U.S. state.
