HUELVA. LONDON. 1 Ordinary Share of £5. brown, buff, black. #375000. No 574852. Rio Tinto was formed in 1873 to work ancient copper mines in Huelva province, southwest Spain. It is much the most ancient of the great mines of today, and its history stretches back into the mists of antiquity. The first semi-authentic account of themine dates from the 11th century B.C., when the Phoenicians traded in copper made from its ores. Carthage worked the mines for centuries, followed by the Romans, also for centuries. The Moors also profited from them, but after expulsion by the Spanish, the mines were little exploited. There were various attempts to work them, but the next major development came with the London formation of the Rio Tinto Company. The main product was still copper, but some silver and other metals were also produced. Central fold, pin-holes and trimmed borders (outside the printed part of the cert.). A large format share, of typical Waterlow printing, with allegorical vignette of a woman and little angel in front of a busy river scene. Text in English and French. An important piece of what is today the world's second-largest metals and mining corporation producing iron ore, copper, diamonds, gold and uranium.
