Company founded in Scotland, 1862, to mine in Spain, a most unusual combination. The sulphur& copper mine was located in the village of Tharsis, province of Huelva. The mine is known for its fine goethite specimens, a mineral consisting of iron oxide-hydroxide named after the German writer Johann W. von Goethe. The company also built a railway from the mines to the port of Huelva (30 miles). The company became a major world trader in sulphurand was also a significant seller of copper and some iron. Renamed Tharsis plc in 1981. Extremely rare and an important company.
