The Nobel company was set up in Baku in 1876 by Ludvig and Robert Nobel, and was, during the late 19th century, one of the largest oil companies in the world. In 1879 the Nobel Brothers Petroleum Production Company was formed in St. Petersburg, and acquired various other oil companies, particularly in Baku, and became one of the three companies which dominated Baku production. It employed 50.000 people, produced 1/3 of Russian crude oil, and 40% of the refined product. After the revolution the Nobel family fled to Sweden and the assets came under the control of the Russian state, although the family had manyassets elsewhere in Europe, and remained extremely wealthy.
