PETROGRAD. Prov. cert. for 1 Share of 100 Rbls. red, black. No 1110. Folds. Successor company of the P.P. Demidov firm. This is a truly important Russian noble family, possibly second only to the Tsar himself in wealth during the late 18th and 19th centuries. Their progenitor was DemidAntufiev, a blacksmith from Tula inthe 17th century. His son Nikita Demidov made a fortune by manufacturing weapons and establishing an iron foundry for the government/Tsar Peter the Great. For two centuries, the Demidov plants produced a large portion of Russia's iron and steel. Even the Palace of Westminster was constructed of Demidov metal products. The revolution impoverished the family and the descendants currently live in Finland. The company of which we offer this certificate, was in fully in family hands until 1896. It became a joint-stockcompany on 24 October 1896, but remained controlled by the Demidov family. See also previous lots.
