PARIS. Promesse de Part Bénéficiaire, unissued. blue, pink. #20000. No 473. Folds. The idea to link the Baltic Sea (at Riga) with the Black Sea (at Kherson), by linking the rivers Dvina and Don was first proposed in the 1890s. This French company was formed to study the idea. Due to WW1 and the subsequent revolution, the project was never realised, at least not on the scale envisaged. Small local canals do link the two rivers today, but they do not represent a through shipping route between the two seas. Superb design by Métivet, with a border of all sorts of shipping and port themes. Text in French and Russian. Very rare piece.
