MOSKAU. Action de 250 Rbls. Serie 4. brown, blue, red, black. No 16285. Generally worn condition with large part of the original lower right corner missing and replaced by a (removable) colour photocopy. Quite a bit of staining. Yet, this 4th issue is certainly extremely rare, with the 3rd issue shares of this bank much better known. The fourth issue brought the capital from 4 to 10 million roubles. The bank was formed 1912, on the model of the German Raiffeisen bank, to regroup the +/- 1500 local and small credit cooperatives. Nationalised 1918. A London subsidiary, under the same name, opened in 1916, and became from 1919 onwards the London bank of the Soviet Government. Its main function was trade finance, but it was instrumental in gaining western finance for development projects in the Soviet Union. After WWII it opened branches in Shanghai, Beirut and Singapore. It was widely believed that the Soviet Union used the bank as cover for some of its agents! Very striking and attractive share, with a fine flower border, designed by Ivan Bilibin (1876-1942), a well-known painter and graphic artist.
