LISBOA. Obrigaçao Rs.90. olive, black. No 2412. Heavily hole-cancelled. Large format with some edge-damage. Text in Portuguese and English. An important railway line running through present-day Angola from west to east: from the inland (giving access to the mineral wealth of Congo) to the Atlantic Coast. Construction by this company had started in 1903 and by 1929, the railroad had arrived at Luau, at the border to the Belgian Congo. In its heyday, the Benguela Railway was the shortest way to transport mineral riches from the Congo to Europe. The line proved very successful and profitable, reaching its operational peak in 1973. When in 1975 the Angolan Civil War broke out, the railway was heavily damaged and fell into disuse. Only this one piece is known to us.
