BRAGA. Acçao of Rs.50. B/S Cat. 190A. green, black. #1200. No 9. Folds, a few brown spots and tiny edge-splits. Attractive vignette of a mules-drawn tram (so-called American cars). The city of Braga, in the Minho province, is the third-largest urban entre in Portugal and an important religious center (seat of the Primacy of the Spains). Mules or oxen pulled tramways were first seen in the city around 1877. In 1882, this company was founded to extend the city tramway network, and build the Bom Jesus funicular to provide transport to the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus, situated on top of a too difficult hill (116m, 42% slope) for the animals to overcome. Steam locomotives were introduced the next year. In 1905, the Co. de Carris de Ferro de Braga requests authorisation to electrify its network. The first electric tramway line in Braga opens in 1913 and the work is finalised the next year. Busses replaced the trams in the early 1960s. By then, public transport in the city was already under local government control and this company liquidated. Certainly extremelyrare, possibly unique.
