First started by two railroad employees who kept a few animals on a railway property just outside the city of Rotterdam. In 1854, they opened the garden to the public. Due to its imminent success, a zoological society was formed and in 1857, this zoological company was founded with a capital of 300.000 guilders (first shares issued 1858 - one of which we offer here). The zoo was destroyed at the outbreak of WWII but they quickly found newpremises at Blijdorp, Rotterdam. Still open today as 'DiergaardeBlijdorp" and claiming to be the best visited zoo in the Netherlands.
