FIRENZE. Bond of 3 Luoghi. black on vellum. Folds, trimmed border at the top just above the printed part of the certificate. The Monti were mediaeval financial institutions, of charitable origin, but becoming commercial - in effect, banks. They became numerous and powerful in Italy. The Medici family of Florence were great promoters of the Monti, and most of the Monti papers we see today are from Florence. This piece is a certificate of deposit of 3 luoghi (obligations of 100 ducati), and shows the Medici symbol of six loaves of bread. It isMonte Non Vacabile del Sale (based on the salt tax, and transferable), issued in accordance of the Decrees of 27 June, 18 July and 13 August 1625 and the Decree of 22 April 1637. Printed by copper-engraving on vellum. One of the earlier and rarest of all Monti pieces.
