The company's first products were commodity food additives such as saccharin, caffeine and vanillin. Monsanto expanded to Europe in 1919. In the 1920s, the company expanded into basic industrial chemicals. During WWII, the company assisted in the development of the first nuclear weapons. Today, its best-known product is Roundup, a glyphosate-based herbicide. The company also became a major producer of genetically engineered crops. Taken over by the German company Bayer in 2016 for US$66 billion.
