Founded 1887 by George Watson to sell margarine as an alternative to butter. The company expanded rapidly and by 1905 it had 105branches all over Britain. They had strong links to Denmark as much of their dairy produce was Danish. Main products were butter, cheese, margarine, eggs and condensed milk. They focused on the working class and in 1916, they opened their 1000th shop,making it the most extensive company in Britain. Maypole Dairy had become the biggest employer in Britain. Absorbed by Allied Suppliers in 1964 and the final Maypole Dairy closed in 1970.
