Receipt of 6 Pounds 5 Shillings. black. Generally somewhat worn condition with repaired bottom right corner and cut borders, but the printed text is complete. Payment of 6 pounds 5 Shillings by Her Majesty's Exchequer as three months Annuity. The loan, issued in 1694, was based on an "act for granting to their Majesties certain rates and duties upon tonnage of ships and vessels, and upon beer, ale, and other liquors". The total loan amounted to 1,500,000 Pounds and was to finance "a vigorous war against France”. This refers to the Anglo-French War from 1689-1697, part of the so-called Nine Years' War or War of the League of Augsburg. In this war, France faced a European coalition and ended with the Treaty of Ryswick. Signed by Hugh Boscawen, 1st Viscount Falmouth (1680-1734) - a nephew of the Boscawen in the previous lot. He was also a Cornish Whig politician who sat in the House of Commons (1702-1720) until he was raised to the peerage. He inherited the Tregothnan estate (near Truro, Cornwall) from his forementioned uncle.
