BERLIN. Namens-Actie über 1000 Mark. buff, black. #500. No 3907. Printed on thick paper. Generally somewhat worn condition with folds, 4 cancellation holes (but covered with paper taped on the back), and somewhat discoloured paper. In the 1820s Berlin had a peacock menagerie, but it was decided to reorganise it into a zoo. One of the promoters was Alexander von Humboldt, who had influence at the royal court, and the plan was finally approved. A company was formed in 1843 and went into business. Stamp giving free entry to the aquarium. Very fine border design of animals - lions, bears, elephant, giraffe and much more. Transfer notes on the back until 1957.
