PARIS. Diplôme. black on vellum. Folds. A most remarkable discovery: a membership "diploma" (member titulaire) in the Paris Zoo as early as 1857! In 1854, Isidore Geoffrey Saint-Hilaire founded the Société ImpérialeZoologiqued'Acclimatation in the northern part of the Bois de Boulogne. We believe this "diploma" is in essence a certificate of membership in the zoo association which was at that time not yet a share-based company. As a member, one was part of the organisation who managed the zoo. Indeed, shares were only issued when on 1 April 1859 the Compagnie Anonyme du Jardin Zoologiqued'Acclimation du Bois de Boulogne was officially created, with a capital of 1 million francs. The zoo was finally laid out on 22,5 Ha of land in the Bois de Boulogne, and was opened on 8 October 1860. The members of the company included, apart from the founding citizens, Emperor Napoleon III, princes, the higher nobility, and military officials. It was a large-scale and luxurious affair. Although in the beginning, exotic animals, mainly from French colonies, were brought here, today visitors see mostly indigenous animals. It is basically converted into a children's amusement park. This certificate - in some ways a share - is personally signed as president by the founder of the zoo, I. Geoffrey Saint-Hilaire. A unique discovery.
