HAINAUT. JEMMAPES. Coupon d'Action de F500. black. #3040. No 632. Folds and some brown foxing. Although this company was formed only in 1840, the coal deposits in this area had been worked for very many years, lately by an informal company. By 1836 it was clear that some order, and external finance, had to be brought to the operations, and a proper company was required. First, the owners tried to sell to the Société de Commerce and to Rothschild, but a price could not be agreed. Finally, the great French financier Jacques Laffite agreed to invest, and this company was formed. Laffite already had coal investments in the area; his Cie du Centre du Flénu bought half the shares in the new Turlupu company, and marketed the Turlupu production. Among the directors were A.Pompon-Levainville, Fr. Sapin and Erculisse. Turlupu was not a happy company; production and profits were much lower than expected, and there were many disputed between shareholders. Finally in 1853 the company was absorbed into the S.A. Charbonnages du Bonnet-et-Veine à Mouches. A rare piece.
