AUSTRIA. WIEN. Actien-Schein über 500 Gulden Wiener Current. black. No 23. Folds. Company founded as early as 1797 to exploit the peat digging in Moosbrunn (Lower Austria) for which the Austrian Crown had given this company the concession. In those days, peat (also known as turf) was used not only in gardening, but also as domestic fuel (cooking, heating), especially in rural areas. By the end of 1797, 10 million pieces of peat had been produced by this company. Only 50 share certificates were issued! Decorative paper seal. This is very probably the only Austrian share from the 18th century. Only 2 or 3 pieces have been found many years ago. The oldest Austro-Hungarian share we know of and perhaps the first share in the German language.
