PARIS. 1/5 Part. orange, black. #422535. No 62302. Fold and pin-holes. Fine Egyptian design by Fraipont, engraved by Renard, of temple columns, sphinxes, etc., and shipping. Underprint of the head of a pharaoh. These pieces were issued after a ruling in 1930 that all old shares had to be exchanged for new shares (or 1/5 shares). The company was formed by Ferdinand de Lesseps, in 1856. The company had a privilege for 99 years, after which the Canal was to revert to Egyptian control. Egypt held 44% of the shares, but these were bought by the British government in 1875. In 1956 the Canal was nationalised by the Egyptian government. All the Suez pieces are rare and wanted, and this one is no exception - a great classic.
