PARIS. Action de F100. brown, orange. #5000. No 704. Large format piece, designed by E. Loevy, with vignettes of Arab farmers ploughing, and girls carrying fruit and a water jug. Border of vines. Presumably the company was named after Mount Hermon. Edward Loevy, painter and illustrator, was born in Warsaw in 1857, and died in Paris in 1911. He studied at the Academies of St. Petersburg and Munich, then moved to Paris. He specialised in portrait-painting, and produced some 5.000 illustrations for the Encyclopédie Larousse, mostly portraits. His work was shown at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. Palestine was part of the Ottoman Empire until 1917. We know of only four Palestine companies issuing shares under Ottoman rule (Jewish Colonial Trust, Hermon, Anglo-Palestine Co. and Palestine Land Development Co) and this piece is by far the prettiest and rarest of them.
