PARIS. Action de F500. blue, black. #800. No 368. A reconstruction of 16th century Paris with spectacles such as dancing, shops, reconstructed prison, costumes, plays, display of torture equipment, etc. As such this shows how life was under the rule of King Henry IV who ruled France between 1589 and 1610 as well as Navarre from 1572 to 1610. He was the first monarch of the Bourbon branch of the Capetian dynasty in France. As a Huguenot, he was involved in the Wars of Religion before ascending the throne in 1589. Once crowned, he changed his faith from Calvinism to Catholicism. In 1598 he enacted the famous Edict of Nantes, which guaranteed religious liberties to the Protestants thereby ended the civil war. He was one of the most popular French kings, showing great care for the welfare of his subjects. Yet, he was murdered by a fanatical catholic, François Ravaillac. In France, he is sometimes called le Vert galant (the green gallant), a reference to his constant womanising. He also gave his name to the Henry IV style of architecture. Largeformat with vignettes of Henri IV, a knight, gallows, executioner's block, etc. Amusing piece.
