In 1798 Parliament passed an order creating a fund for voluntary contributions for the defense of the country (then involved in war against Napoleon). This brought a great campaign across Britain to encourage contributions, with churches and other organisations starting local campaigns, and concerts, etc, being organised to raise funds. Funds raised were paid into the Treasury account at the Bank of England. Decorative panel on left.
