Founded in 1911 by a number of local citizens who collected 375.000 marks under the form of share capital and 150.000 marks from a bond issue the sameyear. The zoo opened in 1912 and was a great success as a favorite meeting place for the people of Nürnberg. A large expansion took place in 1925 and a capital increase four years later paid for it. In the Hitler years, Nürnberg became an important center of Nazi party rallies and they used the buildings and premises of the once peaceful zoo for their manifestations as well landing spot for Zeppelins. The animals moved to another part of town (Schmausenbucks) where a new zoo, owned by the city ofNürnberg, opened. Magnificent, large format bond with detailed vignettes of 8 different annimals.
