PARIS. Billet de 1000 Livres. black. No 10534. Unusual vertical format with 20 coupons (1790-1809) and at the bottom the actual 1000 francs bond issued early 1785 as part of the December 1784 loan issue. The loan amounted to 125 million Livres and promised a 5% interest and, with an amount of 175 million Livres clearly oversubscribed. The loan was organized by Charles Alexandre de Calonne (1734-1802). He was Controller-General of Finances from 1783 onwards and tried to remedy the fiscal crisis, creating a vast and ambitious plan of revenue-increasing (with an important land-tax) and administrative centralisation. He couldn't get enough support for his plans, and was dismissed by the King in 1787. The lot includes the publication of an Edit du Roi regarding the creation of this bond (8 pages). Issued just a few years before the French Revolution and thus reflecting a very interesting period in French history, not in the least regarding its public finances
