54 MEURTHE. PARIS/NANCY. Cert. de 16 Actions. black. Folds and a few small brown stains. Formed Nancy, after 1806, but this share issued Paris, 1811. Production of salt in Lorraine has a long history, reaching back before the Romans. The much-hated gabelle (salt-tax) of the Ancien Régime led to a concentration of the previous artisan-level industry into the hands of the wealthy (especially the ducs de Lorraine). In 1792 the gabelle was abolished by the Convention, but reintroduced by Napoleon in 1806 (the decree is mentioned on the share), who created this public company, based on the great salt-mine of Varangéville. This certificate was issued in 1811 to the 'Domaine Extraordinaire de la Couronne', described as "les domaines et biensmobiliersouimmobiliers que l'Empereurexerçant le droitde paix et de guerre, acquiert par des conquêtesou des traités". This was one of Napoleon's many ways of acquiring more funds to meet this enormous military needs. This domaine was, of course, abolished, after 1815, but the company remained in existence, although the industry was gradually broken up into a number of commercial companies. A unique find.
